About Captain Rob
I'm Captain Rob Kolb, a U.S. Coast Guard licensed captain and Coast Guard Auxiliary member with over 30 years of real-world experience on the Great Lakes and Caribbean. My mission is simple: to help boaters move from uncertainty and stress to calm, confident decision-making on the water.
Over the years I've watched good boaters struggle with the same things over and over, not because they weren't capable, but because nobody ever gave them the right tools, the right information, or the right training. That's exactly why I built everything you'll find here.
Most boaters check a normal weather forecast before heading out, temperature and chance of rain, and stop there. Most don't even know they should be checking a marine forecast instead. Wind direction, wind speed, wave height, and dominant period are what actually affect you on the water, and even when that information is available, very few people know how to interpret it. I built DockWise because I got tired of watching good boaters get rattled at the dock. DockWise gives you all the marine weather data that matters and tells you exactly how it will affect you while docking, at your home dock, the gas dock, or any dock, in real time. Know before you go.
I built Helm Cards because devices fail you out on the water. You may not have signal, your battery could be dead, or a wet screen and wet fingers make a phone useless right when you need it most. And under stress, the brain stops working the way it should. People freeze and don't know what to do next. Helm Cards solve that. Pull out the deck that applies, read through the steps, and you have a clear path forward in the moment that matters most.
My online Boating Mastery Course is built from real captain scenarios, not textbook theory. It covers procedures, decision-making, and real-world best practices you can actually apply on the water, at your own pace, before you ever leave the dock. It is the fastest way to build a solid foundation before getting behind the wheel.
And for those who want real hands-on experience, I offer private one-on-one lessons on your boat, in your marina, in the conditions you actually face. We work on docking, anchoring, navigation, communication, and emergency basics until it feels natural. No classrooms. No simulations. Just calm, structured instruction from someone who has spent 30 years doing this for real.
Boating should feel calm, predictable, and enjoyable, not stressful or overwhelming. Whatever stage you are at, I have a tool or a program that will help you get there.
